April has been a month of movement for Oval Coffee Roasters, from new retail launches and café service to New York City coffee catering and a museum visit that brought coffee into a different kind of frame.

Retail expansion

We’ve had a meaningful stretch of new retail launches across the New York metro area and the Mountain West.

In the New York metro area, you can now find Oval at DeCicco & Sons across Westchester County, with locations in Ardsley, Armonk, Bedford, Harrison, Larchmont, Pelham, Somers, Scarsdale, and Sleepy Hollow.

DeCicco & Sons is the kind of grocery environment we admire: serious food, strong prepared offerings, and a sense that shopping can still feel connected to craft rather than just inventory.

We’ve also expanded west with Clark’s Market, now in five locations across Colorado and Arizona, including Telluride, Snowmass Village, Norwood, and Sedona.

These are places people choose with intention, and the stores reflect that. For us, it’s a natural fit: coffee for home, travel, slow mornings, early starts, and the small rituals that still matter when you’re away.

We’re grateful to be working with retailers that treat grocery as something more than a transaction.

New distributor spotlight

We’ve begun working with Whisha Coffee Distributors, a coffee-focused distribution partner supporting Oval Coffee Roasters across Northern California and Southern California.

Whisha’s specialty is coffee. Their direct-store-delivery model, merchandising support, inventory management, freshness focus, and relationships with specialty retailers help craft coffee programs stay visible and supported at store level.

Cafe expansion: now pouring at Moss Cafe

You can now find Oval at Moss Cafe in Riverdale, the first café serving Oval in The Bronx.

Moss is a thoughtful local café with an evolving breakfast and lunch menu built around local ingredients, in-house cooking, and a pastry selection that is worth paying attention to.

They’re now using our Bowling Green Women-Grown Coffee for iced coffee. Most iced coffee leans darker and more forgiving, so using a lighter roast takes a little more precision. It’s the kind of choice that says a lot about the place: careful, local, and willing to do things the right way.

If you find yourself in Riverdale, Moss is worth the stop.

Events and coffee catering in New York City

This is a busy time of year in New York for meetings, activations, and events that require people to be alert while standing in well-designed rooms. We’ve been working steadily each week, providing specialty coffee service for groups across the city.

One recent highlight was Anheuser-Busch Creativity Day at TikTok, where we served coffee throughout the event. We’ve included a short video to give a sense of the setup and atmosphere.

Coffee, Here and There #2

The image at the top is a work that caught my attention recently at Magazzino Italian Art, Jannis Kounellis’ Senza titolo (Bilancino e caffè), or Untitled (Scales and Coffee).

At first glance, the piece is spare: a metal structure holding a series of small scales filled with coffee. It has the severity of something industrial. But the coffee changes it immediately. It brings in trade, markets, port cities, work, ritual, and daily pleasure.

The scales suggest commerce and measurement, but also judgment, craft, and exchange. Coffee has always lived somewhere between those things.

Kounellis returned to coffee often in his work, in part for its smell, including his 1989 piece in the Tate collection. He once said, “the smell of coffee, this is painting.” For him, it was both material and imagined: present in the room, but also carrying ideas of distance and travel.

At Magazzino, the coffee is meant to enter the space through aroma, not only appearance. The work asks to be experienced beyond sight.

That part didn’t fully come through when I saw it. The smell was faint, or gone. Still, I liked the ambition. There is something convincing about treating smell as part of the aesthetic experience, not as a novelty, but as something serious. And I’ll take the liberty of extending that to taste as well, if only because that’s where we spend most of our time.

Coffee is especially good at this. It can suggest closeness, travel, memory, labor, refinement, and pleasure without needing to say any of it directly. Kounellis’ work understands that. It’s spare and contemporary, but carries a long history behind it.

Magazzino itself is worth the trip. It’s a relatively new museum, focused with unusual clarity on postwar and contemporary Italian art. It sits just outside Cold Spring, which many New Yorkers know as a weekend destination, though the museum is far enough from the Metro-North stop, and along a busy enough road, that you’ll want to plan accordingly.

They also have miniature Sicilian donkeys on the property, which feel like the right way to end a visit after spending time with work that asks quite a bit of your attention.
