FAQ
1. About Our Coffee
What makes Oval Coffee Roasters different?
We created Oval to reflect the pace, style, and clarity we want in our day. Roasted in New York City, our coffee is designed to be both beautiful and practical — from blends that are smooth, flavorful, and easy to enjoy, to formats that travel well. We keep language simple with names like Half Caff and Women-Produced, so you don’t have to guess what you’re getting. It’s specialty coffee made for real life — thoughtful, direct, and meant to feel good.
Explore our light-roast blends in the Shop All Coffees collection or see behind the scenes in our Photo Gallery.
Where is your coffee roasted?
All of our coffee is roasted by our team in New York City. We roast in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx using Loring roasters. That setup lets us stay hands-on with quality while scaling responsibly.
Find local retailers on our Store Locator.
Are your beans organic or sustainably sourced?
We source through long-term relationships, and all of our coffees would broadly be considered sustainably produced. Many of our coffees are certified organic at origin, but because we aren’t certified organic as a company, we don’t lean on that term in marketing. We focus on traceability, producer integrity, and cup quality.
Learn more about our approach in recent Press & Media features and the partner associations we support.
Do you offer Water Process decaf?
Yes. We use chemical-free water decaffeination methods — including Swiss Water Process (BC, Canada) and Mountain Water (Veracruz, Mexico), depending on seasonality. While we don’t currently offer a 100% decaf bag, you’ll find this process in our Riverside Blend, which is intentionally crafted as a half-caff: about half Swiss Water Process decaf, half fully caffeinated coffee.
Riverside is available as whole bean and single-serve pour-over.
What is “women-produced” coffee?
In our Bowling Green Blend, we buy lots from women who manage, grow, and sell their own coffee. We work with them directly because the coffee is exceptional — clean, sweet, structured — and because their ownership and leadership matter. It’s not a charity angle. It’s respect and partnership.
Curious which origin is in the current lot? DM us and we’ll literally send you a photo of the burlap sack.

What does “naturally processed” or “sun-dried” mean?
Natural processing means the coffee cherry dries whole in the sun before the seed is removed. Done well, it creates fruit-forward sweetness and expressive character with just a touch of fermentation. We release that style as The Natural — our playful, fruit-driven light roast.
Try The Natural in whole bean or single-serve pour-over.
2. Brewing, Format & Usage
How do I use your single-serve pour-over packs?
Tear open the pouch, anchor it over your mug, and pour hot water slowly in a few passes. Each pack brews one clean, café-level cup. No grinder, no machine — just hot water and a cup.
Browse our single-serve pour-over 8-packs: Bowling Green (Women-Produced), Riverside (Half Caff), The Natural (Sun-Dried).
Why doesn’t my single-serve pour-over stay on the mug?
The arms are designed for most standard mugs. Extra-wide, very tapered, or super-thick rims can cause slipping. If that happens, you can hold the filter gently in place while you pour. Please be careful with hot water.
Want to see it in action? Check our Video Gallery.
What if the arms on my pour-over filter tear?
A small tear is usually fine — you can still brew by holding it in place. If it’s not usable, reach out and we’ll make it right.

How do I brew a stronger cup?
To intensify your coffee, try one or more of these:
- Use less water (about 6 oz instead of 8 oz).
- Pour more slowly to increase contact time.
- Use two pour-over packs for a double-strength mug.
- If you’re brewing whole bean, grind a touch finer and increase coffee-to-water ratio.
Prefer to not think about any of this? Try our Monthly Roaster’s Choice Subscription.
Can I travel with your pour-over packs?
Yes. They’re TSA-friendly, lightweight, and sealed for freshness. Perfect for flights, hotels, road trips, camping, and office kitchens. Just add hot water.
